William Edwin Erwine
There are band directors and band masters. William Edwin Erwine was a bandmaster at Fairport schools for 18 years. Bill graduated from Ohio University where he participated in both marching and symphonic band. He served his country as a army sergeant in world war II. His teaching career began in Zanesville, Ohio, where he led the high school band to superior ratings in 11 out of 12 years.
Bill started teaching in 1964 at Harding high where his concert band earned superior competitive rating 1966, 1968-70,1972-75 and 1979. Students recall Mr. Erwine as a task master, demanding the best effort from everyone. --To be musical. As tough as he was, students thought of him as a gentleman, musician and an outstanding educator. For many students, band was, and still is, a fond memory. The 1986 Harborlight Yearbook was decided to Mr. Erwine.
