Class of 1967
Induction Class of 2023
Dr. William Alto
Bill graduated in 1967 from Harding High and was a six-year member of student council, yearbook staff, and the football team. After Denison University, Rochester (NY) medical school, and a Family Medicine residency at the University of Massachusetts, he left the country.
Bill’s work as a doctor overseas included every facet of medicine—from surgery to public health. He was Assistant Secretary of Health for six years in the remote highlands of Papua New Guinea. After several years teaching at a medical school for Pacific islanders in Micronesia, the family returned stateside.
He earned an MPH, taught medical students and residents, conducted research, and consulted in 15 countries. As a Dartmouth Professor of Family and Community Medicine, he initiated innovative programs providing care to opiate-addicted pregnant women and dental care for the underserved.
He is the author of over forty medical publications and The Little Black Book of International Medicine.
