Esko Sarkkinen
Esko Sarkkinen was an All American End at The Ohio State University from 1937-1939 and played in numerous all-star games including the Blue-Gray Classic. After two years coaching and playing high school football Esko enlisted in the Coast Guard assigned to the New London Coast Guard station where he played and later coached the linemen. He coached football for Woody Hayes at OSU for 32 years from 1946 to 1978. In 1957 Hayes called Esko “the finest end coach in the country”.
Esko was inducted into the Ohio State Varsity “O” Hall of Fame in 1980. Esko Sarkkinen graduated from Fairport in 1936. He played and was captain of the football and basketball teams and was the All Lake Shore League in both sports.
He was a Homeroom Officer in Junior and Senior year, member of the National Athletic Honor Society, Class Officer, Camera Club and Scholarship Club.
